Background:
In 2008 in a prayer event "Christ Day" God set Estonia and her young ones to the heart of Tommi Hakkari, the editor of Nuotta magazine. In the same event a youth visionary from Estonia, Lehari Kaustell had received an encouragement to contact the Nuotta magazine. As a prayer answer we were blessed to start publishing a new Christian youth magazine in Estonia called Pluss.
We published an ad in the Nuotta magazine in order to collect money for the making of the Estonian magazine. We received just enough money that it was possible to publish the first issue on March 1, 2009. Pluss is the first Christan youth magazine in Estonia, Estonia has seen nothing like it before.
Soon after, excited about the Estonian Pluss magazine, a missionary worker assigned to Russia Pekka Jauhiainen suggested that the same idea would be extended in order to publish a magazine in Russian. The first ever Vybor magazine in Russian will see daylight in February 15, 2010.
In both projects the young themselves make a magazine for the young. The experience of 30 years from the Nuotta magazine in producing Christian youth media have been utilized in making of the two other magazines.
Why to Estonia and Russia?
In Estonia there are 400.000 people under the age of 30 and only 0.5% attend in Christian church. Estonia is the most secularized country in the European Union and maybe in the world. They need gospel hard! In Russia the situation is a bit different: people are much more religious than in Estonia, but there still is not a lot of living faith to Jesus. Especially the young are secularized and there is a market gap for gospel. The Russian magazine serves mainly in the are of St. Petersburg with its 5 million inhabitants but also in Estonia where there are a lot of Russian-speaking young people. We hope that the main news of the magazines Pluss and Vybor, Jesus, would build a bridge over this language barrier.
What both countries have in common is the small resources of the churches for youth work. They themselves do not have the resources to start and produce Christian youth media. The Pluss and Vybor magazines are thus pioneer work in its true meaning.
Where are the magazines distributed and in what quantities?
Pluss and Vybor magazines are directed to non-believers or those who know little of faith. Within possibilities they are dealt out in schools, public spaces - where young people are. According to our experiences a youth magazine is a great tool for evangelism, because a magazine you can take everywhere and read it where and when you want - away from prying eyes. What a great way to tell about Jesus!
8000 copies were printed of the first issue of Pluss and the first Vybor will have about 4000 copies. The aim is to publish Pluss and Vybor magazines with 32 pages four times a year from the year 2011 onwards.
You are needed!
Most of the Pluss and Vybor magazines are made through volunteer work (editing, illustrations, make-up). In the team there has been over 20 young people. A wonderful thing! Not all of the work related can be done through volunteering though. Printing, distribution, marketing, the development work for the Internet services and the graphic finishing of the magazine are things that demand money.
We need your prayers and economical help for making this reality! Therefore I challenge you: if the Bible has helped you to build your own life, open that door for our friends as well! Let's all together give such a gift that bears fruit in Heaven! "Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." 2. Corinthians 9:7
Examples of the expenditures
- 10 Euros pays for 20 magazines
- 100 Euros pays for 200
- 400 Euros pays for make-up of one issue
- 1000 Euros pays for the cargo or part of the printing
- 4000 Euros pays for one entire issue of Pluss or Vybor
In a year we need support for the amount of 32.000 Euros. That many will give 4 Pluss magazines to Estonia and 4 Vybor magazines to Russia. According to even cautious estimates the magazines will reach almost 100.00 young people in Estonia and Russia. Your monthly support enables a long-span work amidst the young.
